Still going through old photos. This Flashback Friday is dedicated to some crazy motherfuckers who died before their time.
I just heard that Robin Williams apparently committed suicide and it’s pretty upsetting. I was a huge Robin Williams fan as a kid I don’t think any comedian has ever made me tear up in movies. Dead Poets Society killed me and even hacky movies like Patch Adams and Jack were pretty effecting somehow. Later in life I loved his dark stuff like Death To Smoochy, Insomnia and Bobcat Goldthwait’s underrated Worlds Greatest Dad.
I got a chance to meet him at NYU’s Tisch Gala and he was the nicest guy, gladly posing for photos and going back stage to talk to the students who were about to perform.
It also hurts because I lost a friend to suicide after a long battle with alcoholism and I know Williams battled with that for years. His infamous Maron WTF Podcast was an amazing look into that and I just listened to the whole thing a couple weeks ago.
Anyway, this is long and overly sentimental, but as far as celebrity deaths go, this one hurts more than most. RIP Robin Wiliams.
I am so glad I got to meet the guy just a few months before he died. I gave him a copy of my book after he gave us a tour of his place for a couple hours. Maybe it will end up in one of the most amazing estate sales of all time.
During our really intense tour he pulled a gun out of his pocket to show us how he protected his Elvis shrine. Just days before his death (apparently of natural causes) he killed a man trying to break into his house.
RIP Tommy Ramone. I was just listening to his last Ramones album Rocket To Russia yesterday.
My #wcw this week is dressed down Ultimate Warrior.
My #WCW just two weeks ago was the Ultimate Warrior. RIP.
I don’t care about Mickey Rooney in any real way but I enjoy this parody song discussion of his character in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman.
This photo was taken at the 40th anniversary party for the Anthology Film Archives. PSH was just in the crowd but someone talked him into introducing Lou Reed. It was a pretty incredible event. Sonic Youth, The Virgins and Kenneth Anger all performed as well.
