Very very much much do you want to dance?
I only took one photo at my birthday dinner and it was horrible but here it is.
Counter clockwise starting with the guy who looks just like me holding the knife…
Benjamin Moses Smith, Doug Sakmann, Goddes Shea, Greta Gerwig, Teddy Blanks and Sam Engel. They are all interesting people and worth Googling. Except Sam. He is very interesting but not that Googleable. Google his cousin instead… Richard Engel.
—I Will Find You
As many of you know one of my closest friends Ross Harman killed himself last September. I used to manage his band The Gaskets and at the memorial service after talking to his friends I decided to play manager one more time and put together a tribute album dedicated to him. More than a dozen artists contributed to the CD including his best friend and former bandmate Teddy Blanks. The CD is currently being mastered but Style Weekly, Ross hometown of Richmond, VA’s weekly paper, included Teddy’s cover of Ross’ song “I WIll Find You” on their yearly local music sampler CD.
In preparation for the release of the album Teddy and I created RossHarman.com which currently has all of Ross’ solo project “Ballpoint Pens” songs available for free download. In the coming months the page will include photos, articles and memories of our friend Ross. It will also include a link to donate money to a scholarship foundation that has been set up in Ross’ name.
"It was a song of his that I always wanted to record with him," Teddy Blanks (above right) says of "I Will Find You," a tune written by Ross Harman (left), his former partner in the electronic pop group, the Gaskets. Harman took his life Sept. 6, and the reverberations within the Richmond music community still can be felt. A tribute CD, featuring the best of his songs, is being readied for a summer release, with artists such as VCR, White Laces and the Atkinsons contributing tracks (more at rossharman.com). The centerpiece, though, is this searching take of “I Will Find You.” Of late, Blanks, fresh from scoring longtime friend Lena Dunham’s cult film comedy, “Tiny Furniture — has been working on a solo album. “I recorded it in my closet,” he says, still getting over his former friend’s death. “I’m going to call it ‘Therapy.’”
Great interview with Teddy Blanks. Ross Harman RIP.
The new Tiny Furniture trailer is out! This movie was directed by my friend Lena Dunham and it is fantastic. It won best narrative feature at SXSW and was very well deserving. It comes out in November and I promise you will hear more about it from me before then…
I also run the movie’s Twitter account so you should Follow It!
Gonna miss you buddy, but tonight we are going to celebrate your life.
